The relief flagship that Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry captained in the battle of Lake Erie, a major naval battle of the war of 1812.

On September 10, 1813, nine small ships including the Niagara, defeated a British squadron of 6 vessels in the battle. A pivotal event in the War of 1812, the victory secured the Northwest Territory and lifted the Nation's morale.

The cannon barrels were cast in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the ship itself was built near Erie, Pennsylvania.
