BonHomme Richard

Year: 1779 AD
Category: Modern
Vessel Type: Warship
Scale: 1/16 inch = 1 foot
Overall Length: 221 feet

On September 23rd 1779, Captain John Paul Jones engaged the British ship HMS Serapis off the coast of England with this ship. After a long battle where the two ships were lashed together, the Americans were victorious. The BonHomme Richard sank shortly after the battle and the Americans sailed away in the British ship they had captured. John Paul Jones is considered to be the Father of the American Navy. The story of the ship and especially of the course of the battle are fascinating. The carver suggests the book John Paul Jones and the BonHomme Richard by Jean Boudriot, translated by David Roberts. This book is very accurate, well illustrated, brief, and is a great read.
